Because they can. They don't want to pay someone even minimum wage, and they don't want to have to mess with things like withholdings for social security and federal taxes for their employees. And it's not just happening in Napa Valley.

These illegal people are actually being victimized. It's funny how we direct our anger over the situation towards the illegals and not the people who make it possible for illegals to live and subsist in this country.

That has some truth.

Most Americans WON'T work for that.

Which is why the rich folk don't pay it.

Let's be honest, just for a minute...just this once on this one question. If you had a choice between paying 3 men $36 a day each and 3 others who will whine for less than $18 an hr ($216) per day per person, who are you gonna hire?

They pay that little because they can.

Because there is such an influx of unskilled workers looking for employment, There is no competition among employers, and the wage equalibrium is being dragged way down.

Legal/illegal status has nothing to do with it. Ther are a large number of unskilled workers seeking employment that naturally is going to bring wages down.

Also, Americans dont want to do heavy labour outdoors. So what? There are many machines that can do those jobs instead, but since labour is so plentiful it is more cost effective to do it by hand.

Easy,...If they do so, your wine will cost three times what is does today. Americans are indeed lazy and cheap in many respects (myself included.) I would not pick grapes for $3 an hour...would you? But obviously, that rate is attractive to the folks who accept it (even though it is obviously an abusive sort of contract) nary a wisp away from true slave labor! It persists so long as the 'market' demands it. Forgive me for my skepticism, but I I find it difficult to believe that there would suddenly be a flock of unemployed Americans showing up to pick grapes in Napa for $12 an hour, Think about it, my friend. Blessings...

When the illegals already here and their friends who will claim they were already here in January, 2007 have received amnesty and will be entitled to minimum wage, there will still be no border security because those Napa Valley rich folks and others like them will need a whole new batch of illegals so they can continue to get $3 per hour laborers.

Because they can.

As the minimum wage increases, so does the cost of living.

US citizens aren't lazy... aren't cheap (Touch your elbow several times when you say cheap like they do in Mexico)

It will stop when we deport the rich of Napa Valley to Mexico with the illegal Mexicans that they employ.

How do you think they got rich in the first place, Americans are spoiled, they do not know how lucky they are. in Thailand A person works 12hrs a day, 7 days a week, if they are lucky they will get one or two days a month off. For about $200. a month. This is true in most of Southeast Asia. That is why so many American company's open factories here, But the cheap labor is not reflected in the prices they charge for their products in the US.

To illegals $3.00 hourly is better than $2.00 to $6.00 a day in Mexico. The employers are cheap, The Americans know what it takes to pay the bills. Illegals live too many to each dwelling. While Americans do have some roommates to help with expenses, but enjoy the peace and quite too when they don't.

People want $8 wine. We can't have it both ways. Cheap labor equals low prices. Americans couldn't keep up with the Mexicans when it comes to harvesting fruit anyway. I've seen it first hand (as a group, Americans don't want to learn). The token American ends up driving the tractor from the fields to the plant.

As long as there are rich people in this country, we will continue to have illegal immigration. Rich people are the ones who hire illegal immigrants as nannies, gardeners, maintenance, etc... Huge corporation love hiring them because they are hard working and don't constantly whine like Americans. And frankly they don't care what you think.
