Dear Lemming Princess,
Before answering I just have to say that I had finally gotten to the point of spelling your previous name correctly and then you changed it. Ever since then I've been wanting to call you Princess Extrordinare!
When it comes to False prophets, there is one thing that we can be very sure of: they are not going to tell anybody that they are false prophets. In fact they are quite likely to tell us that they are the only true religion.
I think it is My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers that tells us that God doesn't leave us in our religious unreality.
It is unfortunate that so many people are so lazy about their religious thinking. So often people don't give it any thought until they experience one or more tragedies in their lives.
I'm so glad you checked!
I'm so glad I checked!
For me reading the Bible from cover-to-cover is what really opened my eyes. I had thought I was a Christian but I discovered that I just belonged to a nice social organization. The people did good deeds in the community and left the Bible reading up to the minister.
It would be very discouraging if we looked only at imperfect people. But when one looks at the awesome uncreated Creator of the universe ones sees that God doesn't even want one person to be eternally separated from Him.
Edit for Bill: God is not in the least bit interested in what you call "True Religion" because religion is ALL man-made. God is interested in Right Relationship and that can only be had through Jesus Christ, God-With-Us.
For His glory,
JOYfilled

Hi, There are so many really good answers given.
False religion is anything taught that is contrary to what the Bible teaches. It is obeying (and worshipping) a "leader" , possibly a false prophet, instead of worshipping Christ.. It is living by any particular church's man made rules, and following the church, when we should be following God's commandments. It is "checking your brain at the door" and letting the leadership tell you what to believe, when we should be studying the Bible to find out exactly what Christ taught us. It takes alot of research, and study, but finding the truth is really up to us individualy; we shouldn't trust our salvation to anyone else!

I don't go anywhere to worship. God and I have a wonderfully loving relationship that is constantly growing. Yes, I watch for false Prophets I am aware of what the Bible says. I am extremely fortunate. I've been able to have conversations with God. I've never been a virgin, and had no place to go for help and comfort. God sent child-looking angels to me when I was tiny. I used to think they were kids just like me, only with wings. God has always been with me, and me with him. I couldn't survive at this point in my life if I couldn't hear him. However, Revelations still scares the pants offa me.
blessed be

Jim Jones, David Koresh, anyone who will say that they know the only way to heaven.
I talked to many different faiths ( I am a religious scholar on my own) and the two that stick out as the number one false prophets are Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses.
The Mormons told me that once a week Jesus (Himself, no less!) comes down to speak with their pastors and prophets. (glad He could make it!) also I personally believe that it is all about men and sex, for them, but I digress.
The Jehovah's witnesses (and catholics, but that is a different story) have their own Bible that is not shared outside their faith. You won't find a J.W. Bible at the book store or at the local Baptist church.
I will find fault in many many churches and their doctrines, but these are the big False ones, in my opinion.
And my salvation is my own to work out with God, no where does it say that my preacher or priest can send me to heaven.

2. No, I do not--but, I do trust them;
I ONLY refer to the Holy Scriptures as the Only Authority.
3. I don't--you work out ur own salvation.
Peace.
edit: u asked who r modern day false prophets....
ALL WHO TEACH the trinity, for 1
ALL WHO DO NOT use God's personal name
OH, U R AN APOSTATE.
Gottcha!
and you, V.G. Thank Jehovah for NOT watering down His truth, "in a book store or baptist church," I don't remember reading/hearing Jesus say go to ur local bookstore.
Regardless, We All Humans Will Know the Truth,

Princess, false prophet could be any of us preaching for personal gain, power over people, misleading the masses, teaching lies about God’s true nature, threatening with punishment on behalf of God, giving out absolution papers and turning people against God and into the worship of mortals.
The bible, along with many sacred books of other religious and philosophical systems, insists on accurate knowledge and a personal relationship with God.
It is a fact; God ‘talks’ directly to each an every one of us wholeheartedly devoted in finding God. He is willing to reveal him self to us and all we have to do is ask, ask, ask…. Then get ready to experience the answers.
As for the salvation, you are absolutely right, it is a private issue btw man and God.
If what we believe is not experience from the core of our existence, then God is far from us and our search is in vain.

Almost yearly there is some "end of the world" doomsday group that claims the end will come on some specific day or year. Invariably they have all been wrong. Probably the most well known over the last 100 years have been Jehovah's Witnesses, who wrongly predicted the end would come several times.
They specifically prophecied that Armageddon would come in 1914 and then 1925. Both times when nothing happened there was a large loss of members.
It was indictated subtly that the end would come in 1975. They also stated that the end would come before 2000. They also said it would come in a generation - that people alive in 1914 would still be alive when Armageddon comes, but were forced in 1995 to drop that teaching too.
These failed predictions certainly makes them false prophets. The Watchtower even used to refer to themselves as prophets at one stage - see http://jwfacts.com/index_files/prophet.htm

Jesus said "by their fruits you will recognize them", but he also said they come in "sheep's clothing". So they APPEAR to be sheeplike, yet their fruitage reveals that their teachings are not in accordance with God's will.
What is the "fruitage" that reveals them to be false prophets? Deut. 18: 20-22 is very plain. One is a false prophet when he speaks a word in the name of Gods other than Jehovah, or if he speaks "a word I have not commanded him to speak". If the word spoken by the prophet fails to come true, that is how we know that Jehovah did not command the prophet to speak it. He is a false prophet.
He may look like a "sheep", have the morals of a saint, and be sincere in his wrong beliefs. That is why Jesus said false prophets were so persuasive. It's not until their fruitage of false prophecy is revealed that one is able to recognize them. And sadly, those under their "spell" aren't usually able to recognize them, even then.

False prophets are described in the Bible in 2 Peter 2:1-3 " ... there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words.

The warning included advice to "test their fruits". So there are true prophets as well, not just false ones.
Otherwise, why would I Cor 12 teach that some will be given the gift (of the spirit) of Prophesy?
Careful that you do not accuse a true prophet without checking him just because he challenges your faith.
