What do I need to get a tax break for filing taxes, i.e. I have a 3 week old who is going to have a babysitter for aprox. 10-15 hours a week at $5/hr for the remainder of the year. Do I need some kind of receipt to prove what I paid each week? It's going to be an individual and not an organization. Any other advice (what can I get back when filing? etc) would be appreciated as well.

You will need the name, address and SSN of the person you paid. I'd strongly urge you to pay by check and mark the memo line for "Child Care Expense". That will suffice as a receipt since most providers (except day care centers) don't provide receipts.

You will need the name, address and social security number of the person caring for your child. You will need the amount paid to that person. If audited, you could need receipts. Also, you can only claim a credit if you are working; if married if both of you are working. Sometimes, you can claim it if you are going to school.

Get her name address and social security number or federal tax ID number. Pay by check, but if you pay cash, ask for a receipt. Fill out form 2441 for dependent care expenses. You can also check out the form and instructions at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i2441.pdf to get all the information you will need.

I would pay her by check and make sure you get her social security number before she begins to babysit for you. I say that because i have known many who have asked their sitter for their number when they get ready to file there taxes and the person has refused.
