No. You don't need anything, not even a government issued ID. You don't need any kind of ID at all. Not even if you're a tourist from another country. Nothing. It's a good idea to bring ID, but you do not have to have it to travel within the US. As for a passport, once you enter, keep it secured in a safe place and don't walk around with it ...unless that's your only safe place. No one will ask to see it.

No you do not, You do not need a passport to go to a border city in Mexico, You need ID to show American immigration on you return, if asked. I do not know about Canada.

No only to enter... We don't ask for "papers" at our states borders only at our nations borders. You do have to have some kind of identification on you though. After entering the country it could be an ID from your country like your country's drivers license.
