the mother cat patrol around the kitten, if i get too close, the mother runs away, if i stay within distance, she will just stare at me

Does the mother cat not have an owner?
If she is too wild, she may keep taking the kitten somewhere *she* considers safe. The best advice I can give, and I have had to do this before because of a wild mom like that, is to make a safe, cozy hide for her somewhere (blankets, darkness, quiet) and keep bringing the kitten back there so she gets the idea.... and hope for the best. Also if that's where the food is at, she will come and get it.

First of all, PLEASE get your cat neutered! There's already enough unwanted animals in the world. Second, try giving her soft food. Make sure she has fresh water daily. Mothers are very protective of their kittens so they are usually more skittish, especially when the babies are really young. No milk. Not really good for cats anyway. And did she just have one? You can give the mama Catsip Catmilk but make sure the kitten doesn't get it. It could get sick. Talk calmly to it. Try to pet or brush the mama. If she gets upset, back off a bit. Who's cat is she? Maybe she's scared because she's been abused? So many factors in this. Call a vet and ask advice as well. Tell them the whole situation.

Good luck! Make sure they're indoors too.

I am currently fostering a semi-feral mom and her babies. Mom doesn't trust me either (she was captured by a rescue orgainization with her babies). If you continue to feed mom she may start to trust you. If possible do try to hold/touch the baby, if you don't the baby may be feral as well (you need to make contact by 3 weeks for the best chance). If mom and baby don't have a shelter somewhere try to make something for them (it can even be a box). I have had my mom for almost 3 weeks and she still doesn't trust me but she lets me touch her babies. As for the baby sleeping, that's normal. At a little over 3 weeks mine are just starting to really move around. Are the babies eyes open yet? If not all the baby will do really is eat and sleep. Also, please get your cat fixed if possible. Hundreds of unwanted kittens are born everyday, many never find a home :(

If mom is a wild cat then sometimes it's best to take the kitten away from teh mom and bottle feed it as the baby will learn from mom how to act around people.

Yes I have advice - get your cat neutered!

TWELVE MILLION un-wanted cats and dogs are euthanized (re: killed) in shelters nation-wide every year, and cats like yours are part of the problem. Over 25 million more feral cats are living in the U.S. - living miserable lives outside, dying slowly from starvation and disease.

There is absolutely no reason for you not to have had your cat neutered. PLEASE do it - this week.

LET MOMMA DO HER JOB!

LEAVE IT ALONE UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY!

It alright.

Momma's got it under control.

Baby kittens sleep a lot.
