In a few weeks we will have a litter of mini pinscher puppies. A few people I know that breed dogs told me that they dock the tails themselves using a string to tie around the tail and about after a week it falls off. What kind of string would I need to use? And how tight would I need to tie it around their tails?

Thanks for all the answers (well, nobody really answered my question). But I just spoke to one of the breeders that does it themselves and they told me what kind of string to use and how to tie it right. Thanks anyways!

Well, i think it's kind of cruel, but my doberman had such a long, bony tail maybe we should've docked it.

Google it girl!

That's considered cruelty in a lot of places and you can be put in jail for that. You do not just put string around a pups tail and let it "fall off". That's very painful, and the puppies WILL feel it. Bring the pups to the vet and have their tails docked by them. If you don't know that you shouldn't dock the tails yourself without proper knowledge and training, you shouldn't be having these puppies. Do not try saying that it won't hurt the puppies because they're young and won't feel it. You try putting string on your finger; have it cut off the circulation and see if in about a week it just "falls off". If you can tell me that does not hurt you one but, you're insane.

Docking tails is not something that should be done by a beginner. First, you have to know where exactly to place the string, and second, if you do it wrong, you'll cause a severe infection that could kill the dogs. Take the entire litter to the vet within 12 hours of birth and the vet will remove the tails and sanitize the area and seal it off for you. It's quicker and safer. Save the DIY jobs for when you actually know what you're doing.

You do not do it yourself with string!!! You go to a vet and let the vet dock the puppies tails. If you know people that dock their pups this way why not ask them? You are only asking here because you probably heard this on some TV show and you want to do it yourself because you are an irresponsible, unscrupulous, greedy backyard breeder that is only trying to make money off of your dog. Take the dog to a shelter or give it away because people like you do not deserve to have a dog. Just disgusting!!!

You f*cking dont, anybody who says they dock their dogs tails themselves is a bad backyard breeder who should have all their dogs taken off them, and them, shot. Not to mention its illegal to perform any sort of procedure that is considered surgery on a dog, and docking is a surgery. The tail needs to be removed by a surgical cut, and they need to cut it so there is a flap of skin that can be pulled over the stump, and sewn up, or the dog will have a bald spot at the end of the tail.

How would you like it if we tied a string around your foot and waited for the foot to die and fall off. You would risk infection, nerve damage and im sure it would hurt.

check and make sure it's legal for you to do as many places consider this to be cruelty to animals. it should be done by a licensed vet as by not doing it correctly can cause health problems like teh bone rubbing and causing an open sore at teh end of the tail, It caan get dirty easily and become infected and may even cause death.
Most vets can do it in 1-2 days after birth

Take the puppies to your veterinarian!!!

I feel it is very inhuman to do it that way!!!

Why take the chance of getting infection?

My guess: Cheaper to have the tails docked, then pay when they get an infection.

You don't!!! You take it to the vet and get it done professionally! If you don't know what you are doing, you can do more harm than good. They can bleed to death if you cut them. Why not either let the dogs have tails, or pay the money and have it done by the vet like you should.

Take your litter of puppies to the Vet and have a professional do it. And while your there then all the puppies can get checked over to see if they're healthy.
