i have exactly the same hair as yours, and got this AMAZING hair cut done to mine, that seriously accentuated my curls and my hair looked absolutely stunning.
its short, like jaw line short, so it cant be put up, but im like you, i like to go for my runs everyday and do quite abit of sport, so what i did was a pinned it up with heaps of boby pins, like at the back of my head, and then with a headband for the front, and it was fine.
its kind of hard to describe, but it has heaps an dheaps of layers all up to about 5-6 inches from the top of your head, jaw line short as ive said, and a sweeping fringe across your forehead. what this does is really make all your curls more free and easy to curl without all the boof, you know?
theres a pic of what im talking about, i dont know if you can still access it, it was from an issue of marie claire, 2006, december issue, with kylie minogue on the front. it has like "how to get sexy summer hair" or something like that, and theres a pic of a girl with blonde hair with this hairstyle inside.
seriously its amazing. but if your still skeptical, just opt for shoulder length hair, with short layers to let your curls curl, without being weighed down by all the rest of your hair.
:)

You definitely don't want to go too short. As you said, the shorter you cut your hair, the more it will poof out. I would suggest getting layers to make your hair lay flat. Since you want to be able to put it in a ponytail, I would make the shortest layer about shoulder-length, with the other layers lengthening from there.

my advice, dont cut it. since its thick, bushy and curly/wavy, it can b managed better when its long than short coz the length will weigh it down thus controlling it. but since ur active, short curly hair will puff up and look bushy. u dont wanna look like beyonce in the movie "gold member", do u?

shoulder length with lots of long layers. The layers should thin it out a bit so it won't get in the way as much when it's down, but it can still be pulled back into a ponytail or with a headband, when needed.

Shoulder length, maybe. You might want to get layers, and straighten it.
