there are no partitions and this is a clean 80 gig hard drive i plan on only having windows xp on this for the OS. How many gb should the partition be and should i have more than one for any reason?

Use it all, no reason to partition that hard drive unless you plan to use a partition as a storage area, which is a bad idea, the best storage area is a CD ROM or USB key Chain. If you make a small partition, say 10GB, you may run out of install space for programs (some programs will only install on the primary C drive.)

Just make a 10 gig partition for windows xp. It shouldnt take any more than that with service pack 2. You shouldnt need any more partitions.
