abdominal exercises only build muscle and if you have a layer of fat on top of them - your belly will look bigger.
to get a six pack abs you have to have low body fat percentage - and the only way to lower your body fat percentage is doing cardio 4-6 times a week for 30-50min -ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat.
its enough to do crunches twice a week 2-3 sets of 20-35reps

In order to get that 6 pack, there are basically three areas that you need to take into consideration. These three areas are diet, cardio, and resistance training.

Diet: You need to increase protein intake, while decreasing sugars and fat intake. You can do this by eating lean meats such as ham, poultry, and fish, vegetables and fruit for carbs, and nuts for your omegas. You might also want to increase your water intake which allows your body to maintain chemical reactions to break down your food. Increase the number of meals, while decreasing the size of each meal. Also, space your meals apart by 2-3 hours with a total of 4-6 meals a day.

Cardio: Cardio boosts your metabolism and allows your body to burn fat. I would suggest you to do cardio in the morning because you are running, walking, etc without any food stored, thus you will be burning fat.

Resistance Training: Although crunches and situps may help you initially, you will need resistance training to better build your muscles. Resistance Training is essentially anything that puts an opposite force against your natural movement. This includes situps at an incline (using a decline bench to do situps) or making the "chair" while hanging from your arms (using stabilizers and your lower abs).
