Much the same as Christians do today.

Recognize and admit error.
Feel remorse and be sorry.
To make a change in thinking and actions.

Baptism was a symbolic cleansing of a person.

John the Baptist baptized many many people. His preaching was powerful and life changing. Many if not most of these people later became followers of Jesus.

Baptism today is a symbolic and public demonstration of becoming a disciple of Christ.

The same way they did afterwards.

The word repent means literally "to think it through again". He was preparing the way for Christ by trying to exhort the Jews to think through their actions and their lifestyles and choose the righteous path.

For, some, it was successful, as Jesus first met Andrew while he was John the Baptist's disciple. Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter.

They had the Law to follow that was a curse to them and no man could keep that law. Jesus ended the law and now you are free. Please read Colossians 2:9-17 . The only way the Jews could get atonement from sins was Thur sacrifice at the alter.

Hmmm... looks like they were all doomed, then, doesn't it? After all, the ONLY way to heaven is through Jesus, right?

Really sucks to have lived and died in OLD Testament times, huh?
