I just bought a new guitar on craigslist and I need to bring it home after summer vacation. Do I check it, bring it on board, or ship it home?? Any other ideas?? thanks

No big deal here, I flew from Vancouver with a guitar I bought on eBay and picked it up in person, - you check it in (special check-in,inquire) it goes in the cargo hold with a good care.I was very much impressed, in deed.

Recently, I checked with an airlines and was told that the guitar would have to be checked in, but in a special carry-on method wherein you would immediately pick it up after deplaning.

The airlines also told me that the closet that was once used for hanging garments and other personal belongings is no longer available for such things as a guitar. Taking the guitar on-board is risky because the overhead containers in regular-sized aircrafts are not large enough to accomodate a dreadnought.

Rather than checking it on an airline for stowage in the luggage hold I would recommend taking it to a UPS outlet and have them ship it home for you. The chances of it reaching home without damage is far greater than having it go through luggage check-in--regardless what the airlines say.

You can check it for sure without a doubt. You may want to ask if they'll let you carry down to the plane and then check it where people leave strollers and things of that nature.

I have to assume that it came in a case, if so check it through as luggage. If not it will have to fit in the overhead storage
