It would have been better to chop it up first.
It will turn to mush as soon as it thaws out.
But you can put it into a stew or sauce.
You cannot serve it raw on a salad.

It is likely that it will taste OK, however, once you thaw it, the texture will be completely changed and all the juices will seep out of it. Frozen onions loose turgidity and unless you want to use it, to make onion juice, it will be worthless. You can probably process the whole thing and cook it, make an onion concentrate to use in a soup or gravy!

Whole unpeeled onions last for months in the pantry. To freeze onions, peel and chop or slice and store in a covered container or Zip lock. There hasn't been enough time for freezer burn, so wash off any ice crystals and use in chilis, soups and stews. There is no reason to freeze an onion unless it is peeled.

As long as it was sealed it should be fine. You can taste it when it thaws, but it won't make you sick. It might just be a little freezer burned, but if it looks fine I'm sure that it will be just fine!

It is perfectly OK to eat. by freezing it you have preserved its value and prevented most of the bacterial growth. Onions is one vegetable that does not have to be blanched or cooked to preserve it. If it froze too slow you may get too much snow or soft texture but not a food safety problem.

As long as it doesn't smell rotten, or feels smushy to the touch, it's fine.
