I have an interview at Bloomingdale's for the job of part-time sales associate. I feel lucky to have even gotten called for an interview, since I'm 17 and just out of high school, and I have no previous job experience. I'm going shopping for interview clothes tomorrow and I'm wondering what would be most appropriate for the occasion.
Also, any advice for what to say or what to expect would be highly appreciated!

I went in for an interview at Macy's a few months ago and was offered a job (actually two jobs)

The standard bit of advice I hear is to dress a level better than the clothes you'd be expected to wear on the job (for example you're supposed to wear a shirt and tie if you work in Macys, so I wore a suit, tie and jacket to the interviews. You might go to Bloomingdales, see what the associates there are wearing and get something slightly nicer. Also feel free to go up to whomever works in the deparment and say that you're buying clothes for an interview (you don't have to tell them it's at Bloomingdales).

Also some standard questions you're likely to get at a department store:

Why do you want to work here? (I love shopping here seemed to be a popular response among the other people I interviewed with)
What would you consider to be good customer service, what was a situation in which you provided good customer service? (You may have to be creative here.)
Do you have any objections to selling credit cards? (You don't if you want the job).

In my case they had a group interview (we did a little bit of role playing, answered some general questions) and were then sent off to a department manager who ultimately decided whether or not to hire us.

Basically just try and portray yourself as someone who is energetic, outgoing, pleasant, courteous and mature.

Good luck.

You should dress the way other employees in the type of job you are seeking dress. But be sure to look around: If you only check out one person, you may get the wrong impression. And make sure your clothes are well pressed. Don't overdo it. The store is not looking for a CEO (at least not at the moment).

You're going to be asked how you feel about customer service, which is what sales is all about. Just think about how you like to be treated by a sales associate. Don't talk about how you DON'T like to be treated. Be positive.

Tell the interviewer you really need to know the products you are selling. You can't really "sell" something you don't know anything about. And (be careful with this one), if you really know your products you may be able to close more sales and you will take less time to do it. Sell more in less time = more time to sell to other customers.

Don't worry about the interview. It will take care of itself if you don't worry too much about it.

Good luck!

A suit is always professional. For your age, I would go with a simple pant suit and a conservative plain top in a brighter color- maybe turquoise. The most important attribute is a positive attitude. Express your desire to learn. Expect questions about your abilities and goals. Good luck!
