firstly, thank you for not being insulting and having an open mind!!
this is how i see it:
if there is no God, when you die, you die thats it! your dead so you wont know about it
but...
if there IS a God, and when you die you stand before Him and He says ' hey man...why didnt you believe in me?'
well....what r u gonna do!?!?
the 'harm' is that He might be there and you are ignoring Him...
i believe in God. not just because i was brought up Catholic, because i have experienced God for myself. i went through a stage of doubting and not believing that God cared about me
but then i realised what i was missing.....unconditional love and forgiveness!!
God loves you, believe it or not
it is never too late to say
'hey God, i think your there...sorry....please forgive me'
He is like a good shepard and we are His sheep. if we stray, He will look for us and try to steer us on the right path again
sometimes, its a bit hard to believe in God. there are so many people that say he's not real, that science can explain everything, and we have everything we need...so why believe in God??
God is a being of unconditional love and mercy. He can show us how to live our lives, for our own good, and for the good of others. i believe in heaven..it is a place of eternal peace and happiness, no more suffering! YAY! now thats good hey!
i dont do good just to get ot heaven. i do it becasue i love God and i know that He loves me and everyone!
leave a comment if you want more.....ill be checking just in case you do
God bless
i hope you will find what you are seeking!
;-)

Surrendering your will to God isn’t about reward and punishment. It’s about how we live each day right now. We do not choose to follow God so that we can sit around thinking about Heaven. The journey is to seek understanding right now.
The consequences are enormous because every single aspect of your life is altered. Those who think there are no consequences to following God, have yet to make a real commitment. God creates something new in us that wants nothing to do with the old us.
The consequence for me is that I am not the same person I was a year ago. Everything in me has changed.

You kind of answered that your self. If there wasn't a God then what harm was there believing in Him. But you see, I know there is a God , so I know there are consequences for non believers. You have a right to your beliefs, but ask your self this. What if there really is a heaven and I did not seek God or try to learn more about salvation? What harm would there be in that?

Which God?
Krishna? Allah? Yahweh? Odin? Zeus? Xenu?
While you may be a hard-lined atheist, and may be asking this kind of question to provoke a thought experiment, it puts the elements of rational thought up to a betting game. Rational thought has some elements of unknowables, but the question of whether it is more rational to believe in SOME god or NO god leave open to question all the benefits claimed by the various proponents of religion ... and the various consequences of non-belief. In the modern world belief in SOME god does not indicate anything about the direction one goes. That choice is met by a role of the dice, and if the Muslims are right, all the Christian infidels are going to suffer the judgment of God.

The consequence in believing in God, is love and happiness, and knowing you are forgiven if you have done something wrong, but you must truly believe in God and ask for forgiveness. If not you may go to hell, whether you believe in God or not. There is harm done to a person by that person himself, when you have done wrong and are not forgiven by any power of authority....good question though, and good luck trying to find a suitable answer.

There is NO consequence whatsoever. However if YOU decided to beliebe in God then YOU would no longer be an atheist. You'd be an Agnostic, unless you chose to follow a particular Religion at which point you would become whatever that Religious group that you chose.

This is a very old argument called Pascal's Wager -- but it makes the buried assumption that a God existing is 50/50 with a God not existing, and it also creates selective accounting about what happens if you go religious. Religious people like to white-wash their own beliefs, and if not held in check by secular governments and secular laws they could produce a lot of grievous stuff.
If you are religious, you might:
--drink cyanide Kool-Aid in some jungle commune where the leader has convinced you he is the Prophet of the Millenium Age and that this mass suicide is now necessary to escape the evil world because he's just ordered a visiting senator shot and so the evil un-Christian outside world just won't leave him alone.
--(if a woman) lose your clitoris to nasty unhygienic surgery by primitive tribesmen who think it's their duty as good Muslims to do it to you.
--(if a woman) after a bad marriage and divorce, find a wonderful new man, someone totally unlike the bad old man, but find out that you are unable to marry him because you are Jewish and your ex is refusing to issue the "get" [divorce document] that sets you free. He's toying with your life, but it has to come from the ex-husband and it's his right according to Jewish law.
--get all sorts of painful and infected tattoos or ritual scarring because of the dictates of some African religion.
The examples (which I drew at random) just mount up, so don't go around saying "believing" has no negative consequences because it does. If you claim to me these examples are extreme, I ask, "Who decides?" What is the central religious office that prevents members of the religion from going to extremes? There is no such office, and for all we know all the other denominations SHOULD be drinking cyanide, but are weaker in their faith than the One True Christians, people who are too weak to live by the ultimate implications of their religion...Likewise Muslim terrorists are few in number, but they are in charge and can accuse any other Muslim of being weak or infidel if they don't hate the West.

not that anyone cares what I have to say regarding this or will believe me anyway, because it is a personal mission, not a group effort, but just to let you know that someone out there believes, yes I believe in God, my mind is free and liberated, I consider myself to be in heaven, that's actually an understatement, my life is perfect, I have true happiness, and I consider myself to be a living god. And yes, Thank you for the stares.

you are wrong on your supposition.
Everything has a consequense.
by just believing in God and especially if you open your mouth you will get attacked by satanic powers. if you open your mouth in in a public place some people will call the police and sometimes you get put in a hospitial. There are freaky people in this world that will stalk and hunt you down like Prey. there are others that think you will need to be assinated, others just want you to live so you can be poisoned and tortured. And all of this comes from publicly professing faith in God and preaching.
