You have to remember, that even if you burn TONS of calories it will not all be fat calories. Your personal trainer is correct to tell you to stay in the fat burning zone. That way you'll be burning fat and not muscle as your body would do in certain situations. Also going too far out of your heart rate zone can cause injury or overtrain strain. If burning fat was all about burning as many calories as possible, losing it would be too easy. You don't want to end up hurting your progress or hurting yourself. Fat took time to build up and to lose it healthily it'll take time to come off. Stay in the fat burning zone and keep your protein intake up(if you're trying to gain muscle).

training in the "fat burning" zone is an outdated and inefficient method of training. for those that are heart healthy you should exercise at a high level of intensity for 60-80 minutes. this would be greater than 70% of your VO2max. the greater the intensity and duration of exercise the greater the increase in the resting metabolic rate after exercise. at the conclusion of exercise the body will utilize a greater amount of oxygen to return the body to the pre-exercise state, this causes an increase in the metabolic rate for hours. low intensity cardio utilizes free fatty acids as the primary energy source during exercise and the body will switch to using primarily glucose for energy after training. there may be a 30+ minute increase in the resting metabolic rate after low intensity cardio.

it's a no-brainer as to which method is more effective for fat loss. it is obviously much harder to perform but the results of exercise are measurable greater and faster if your diet is in check

Burning calores and burning fat are the same thing. If you are on a diet and burn more calories than you eat, you lose weight
