if there is still 'milk' in the coconut, take a large nail and pound it into two of the 'fingerprint' depressions on the end and pour the juice out of it. That will make the next step tidier.

Next find a sturdy spot and take the hammer to it, it should break into two pieces, maybe more.

Then you can scrape the meat (if it's white when it rots or gets a little over it starts to darken and dry out) grate it and toast it in the oven

If you like, I can get you some easy recipes if this all works out.

I'malover of pure coconut, and usually eat it as a snack whenever possible...nail a hole in the three rounded sockets, pour the juice out, makes a nice lil different drink..take a hammer and go to town upon the coconut..peices will arrive, I find that the coconut can be peeled from the hard shell, and able to consume it that way..if not, you may look like a canibal, by eating it straight from the shell, but who cares? (if nobody is around)...it's delicious...
as with a healthy snack...Good luck and i really hope this is what your looking for ; for assistance....Happy Snacking..: ).

Break it....discard the 'milk' (it's actually a natural laxative).

You could then grate the white part (pulp) and you'd have shredded coconut. Once the pulp is dry, your options are limitless. You could bag it and freeze it. Use it in any recipe you'd like.

I love to toast the shredded coconut. Seems to bring out the natural sugars better.
Oven at 350 for 3-5 minutes. Keep a close eye on it, careful to stir it a lot. It will burn fast if left unattended.

It ain't easy, take my word for it. You basically have to bust it open with a hammer, and it's gonna be messy. My advice? If you're in the mood for coconut, buy it pre-shredded ... and if you need a bra, buy Playtex.

2 tablespoons cornstarch
dash of salt
2 3/4 c. milk
2 egg yolks, beaten

Butter a small baking sheet and toast 1/3 of a cup of the coconut. Set aside.
