Aside from being old as the hills, I am aphasic, which is a communication disorder. Language is more than a small challenge to me, and I've devoted almost 15 years to recovery. The rub is that language is doggoned important to me. I am always seeking new words, new usage, new ways of saying things. Everybody probably knows this one, but to me it's new--fundamentalists are:

American Taliban

Vocal, well-financed, extreme fundamentalist Christians attempting to legislate the oppression of homosexuals, women and science at the expense of our national schools, national health and U.S. Constitution. The equation of these politically and financially powerful extreme fundamentalist Christians with the Afgani Taliban --violent extreme fundamentalist Muslims-- emphasizes the false patriotism of these American zealots.

(from Urban Dictionary)

I have heard that, yes. I find it appropriate.

And good for you for recognizing how important language is, even with your aphasia. I wish more people would.

When I start speaking "Urban" then I will accept the words in the "Urban" dictionary.

It seems to me that this "Urban" dictionary is just EVER so slightly BIASED (.... a little heavy on the sarcasm, there!).

I cannot "equate" the Afgani Taliban to these "fundamentalist Christians" simply because the Christians have yet to commit the mass torture and murder that the Afgani Taliban did in order to IMPOSE their ... can't even call them BELIEFS... but their "WILL" on the people they are oppressing... oops... I mean "governing"???

This "definition" says these Christians are vocal, and well-financed, it says they are "ATTEMPTING" to legislate the oppression of .... (fill in the blanks)... well... My question is... where, if these "American Taliban" people are so SUCCESSFUL in their ATTEMPTS... why don't we see piles of human homosexuals, womens, and scientists REMAINS? Where are the body parts cut off from these people? Where are the torture and rape chambers these people employ? By the looks of it, they are the most UNSUCCESSFUL "taliban" I've ever seen in their ATTEMPTS to LEGISLATE oppression!

I DO see the success of single-sex unions in certain states. I DO see women's rights groups and abortion clinics everywhere. I DO see evolution taught in our public schools. If these, so-called "American Taliban" are SO POWERFUL... by golly, I'd hate to be as powerful as they... because they are failing MISERABLY!

Let's not even go into the patriotism issue.

Oh... and let's BURN that Urban Dictionary!!! Yeah... that's the ticket!!! CENSORSHIP!!! Weee-heee!! That's what we want! Don't let anyone have any other opinion then ours! WEEEE!!! Where's the matches???

As a Catholic,we've always regarded fundies as a bunch of crazed zealots - from our perspective,long-term fall-out from the Reformation. Of course they going to succeed in "legislating" anything; everything they want, the Supreme Court will over-rule. I wouldn't worry about it. They are however collaborating closely with jewish neo-cons on Mideastern policy, which doesn't seem to get a lot of attention. I think it's a more worthwhile area of concern than they-want-to-teach-creationism-in-school,since in this cae - our Isreal-centric foreign policy - they actually are getting their way. With a very real potential for a nuclear Armageddon.

Me, I'm a Roman Catholic, so that's not my group. But I'd like to point out that you're painting with WAY too broad a brush. Some are, some aren't.

One major difference between the Taliban, and Christian Fundamentalism, is the latter is not suicidal, and that's a very big difference....

"American Taliban" is a VERY accurate descriptor for the repressive and obnoxious RRR Cultists who seek to destroy vital personal liberties for hundreds of millions of people.
