There is some sort of exercise, I believe for endurance or muscle strength, that involves getting into a push-up position but you lie on your forearms and hold it for as long as possible. what is it called?

It is called a plank exercise and is mainly for building the core muscles, abs and back. you can do the same thing by staying in the push up position. A better exercise, that works more of the body, is to do real pushups but do them slowly, up for a count of 4 and down for a count of 4.

plank.

hold it to long and it hurts like crazy.

you could be thinking about the circle of death exercises too. those are like..hold the push up position with one leg in the air...etc.
