No disrespect intended, but I honestly think you’re wasting your time..Just read the Bible and go to a Catholic Church. You’ll reap the benefits of a better life andd you get to save your soul in the end.
Peace.

There are some really great books out there for beginners, but I would personally recommend any book by Scott Cunningham that you can get your hands on. His books are SO positive, peaceful, and extremely informative, especially for the beginner. Unfortunately he has been dead for a little while, so if you want info on today's Pagan culture, I would recommend that you also look into all the Idiots Guide books that they have on the different subjects you are interested in. I got the one on Wicca and Witchcraft and boy did it help me bone up on the slang terms used by Pagans on the Internet and at social gatherings. Just because you're a newbie, it doesn't mean you have to sound like a newbie. One more thing you aught to check out is the Mystic Mouse library http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Library.htm on the Internet. I find myself consulting it quite often and it has great articles for beginners and advanced practitioners, too. Good luck to you on your magical-journey; I hope you find everything you're looking for!

lol -- chill hun.. you are exploring your path and thats brilliant. but remember that shapeshifting, isn't real.. however there are aspects of witchcraft that are incredibly powerful and very useful... but best to do it under the wing of an old hand.. don't go running to the first coven that says come on saturday,, it'll be fun! ...check them out first.
read this book, the power of the witch - by a lovely lady, called laurie cabot.

I would say to stay away from all that. Avoid it like the plague. You are putting your life in danger when you dabble in that kind of stuff. Look what happened to Saul in the bible when he contacted familiar spirits. God hates that kind of stuff and you don't want to be on the wrong side of God!

Drawing Down the Moon is a great starter. Anything by Zen Budapest is great. The Complete Book of Witchcraft by Ray Buckland (I like to call it Uncle Buckie's Big Blue Book) is full of helpful tidbits. My favorite Carlos Castaneda book is Journey to Ixlan.

sorcery, witchcraft, paganism, etc. will certainly not bring you PEACE. Choose peace, or choose chaos, confusion and death. Sorry, sweetheart, but there are only two choices.

How much of a beginner?
The Everything Paganism Book for a basic overview of Pagan paths (Druid, Shaman, Wiccan, etc.) and a pretty good discussion on ethics and morality, as I recall.
Beyond that, it would depend on what they were looking to learn.
