I have potty trained both my son and daughter and I think it has to be a fact that boys are harder to train. I started by taking my son into the grass in the backyard and saying, "go pee pee." It helps boys to pee standing up because they can see what is happening and connect the sensations.
I think the best thing to happen to potty training is The Potty Stool http://www.thepottystool.com I was skeptical that it would make a difference, but I never would have guessed how well it worked! My kids could climb right up to the toilet on their own and go. I like that I don't have to use or clean a floor potty and I love that my kids are safe and never have to touch the toilet with their hands!
The best part is that kids use it for years. Hope this helps you.

between 2 1/2 - 3 yrs Is what I have heard. Our son is 2 1/2 and we have been trying for a month or so now. It's taking a while he pees well but dosent like to poop in the potty. We are just taking it slow and he will catch on when he's ready.

I have heard everything from 1 year to 5 years. I think both are extremes! It will probably be around 1 1/2 to 3. Your child will let you know. Encourage him by talking pee and poop with him, letting him go to the bathroom with Dad (or another male). We started letting our daughter sit on the potty at around a year, but did not make a big deal of it. We gradually have talked to her more and more about "being a big girl". She is now 2 1/2 and we are stepping things up a little more. Go with your child and it will all work out! Big boy underwear is another good idea! Tell him he can pick them out when he starts using the pottty regularly! We use stickers and small m&ms for treats, according to pee or poop in potty! It worked for our now 9 year old girl, 7 year old boy and we are working on the 2 1/2 year old now! Good luck!

Kids are ready when they are ready. I wish parents would stop worrying about what other kids are doing. Stio comparing your kids to other kids, it will make NO ONE happy!
A few signs of being ready is him knowing when he has to go, holding it for longer periods of time (through naps or whatever), and an interest in the toilet.
If he shows any of the signs, or you think he is ready, then you should start by bringing him in the bathroom with you when you go. It can be a little uncomfortable, but it shows them that everyone does it. To drive the point home better, cheer yourself when you get up. "Yay, mommy went pee pee IN THE POTTY!"
Reward him when he goes to the toilet, or even when he tries but can't. Show him that you are disapointed when he doesn't use the potty, but punishments aren't going to work, and might even scare him from the potty.
