No human or animal possesses vocal chords; they have vocal cords. There is a huge difference between the two.

A chord is a combination of three or more notes played on a given scale by a musical instrument. A vocal cord is one of several found in the throat that resonates sound through vibration.

Hire a singing instructor, or a vocal instructor.

Sunpansy, you don't have to be born with the ability to sing well to have a good voice. Notice when you're a kid (6-11) , you're vocal ability changes very much if you sing a lot. I was in the choir at church for a couple years and didn't sound good at all, but I worked at it and sang for a long time. Then when I was 11 I joined a choir at the music center near me and got even better up until now, I'm in the top choir at school.

It is better to start when you're young and try to build up your voice, but starting later in life doesn't mean it can't be done. Just make sure you practice everyday or every other day, drink plenty of water, and don't strain yourself!

I've found it is more fun to extend your range by singing songs from musicals, but thats just me. Before I started singing the songs with high ranges, my voice oculd only get to high G. Now I am able to get to E or F (two octaves and then some from middle c) on days I've warmed up, and every so often I hit a G.

Just sing whenever you can for about 20 minutes at a time. That I've found is the best time period to sing. If you want to sing more, wait for another 20 or 30 minutes. Don't sing after just drinking or eating dairy products though because the dairy coats your throat!

Have fun and good luck!

get a piano. that's the best. then practice matching pitches & doing scales, which is going up high & going down low to reach your desired range.

Well unfortunately, knowing how to sing has to be a born gift, however I can definately tell you how to improve on your singing voice. Usually before a song, it's good to warm-up (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) continue to do this before you sing. It may sound ridiculous at first, but with continued practice, you'll see improvement. Best of wishes to you!!
