The word occult comes from the Latin occultus (clandestine, hidden, secret), referring to 'knowledge of the hidden'. In the medical sense it is used commonly to refer to a structure or process that is hidden, e.g. an "occult bleed."

The word has many uses in the English language, popularly meaning 'knowledge of the paranormal', as opposed to 'knowledge of the measurable', usually referred to as science. The term is sometimes popularly taken to mean 'knowledge meant only for certain people' or 'knowledge that must be kept hidden', but for most practicing occultists it is simply the study of a deeper spiritual "reality" that extends beyond pure reason and the physical sciences. The terms esoteric and arcane can have a very similar meaning, and the three terms are often interchangeable.

The term occult is also used as a label given to a number of magical organizations or orders, and the teachings and practices as taught by them. The name also extends to a large body of literature and spiritual philosophy.

Occult only means hidden knowledge...basically what is not known widely.

Germ theory and radiation was once in the realms of the occult. Then it was scientifically proven and became widely known...now it is just scientific knowledge.

The occult originated from the first spiritual or scientific person...he or she learned something not widely known.

Moses obviously had occult knowledge...so too the disciples (who could do things laymen could not). Christians saying occult is from the devil are just ignorant.

Occult also means inscrutable or secret.

Occult in our society refers to the inscrutable, secretive worship of dark spirituality. It encompasses all types of foretelling the future, some miraculous works and a person's attempt (sometimes success) in controlling others.

People of the occult are filled with pride. They believe they control these spiritual powers. In reality these spiritual powers are smarter, faster, stronger and more knowledgeable than they. These angels use methods that are beyond the understanding of humans in order to employ these people into "summoning" them.

The fallen angels' only goal is to drive humans into blaspheming the holy Spirit through their pride. The pride in these people dates back to Adam and Eve.

Pride comes before a great fall. It started with the great fall in the Garden of Eden. It continues today through the dark, hidden, secretive activities of the occult. Filled with pride, people try to "summon" life's spirit Himself, the holy Spirit.

So, to answer your question, the occult started with Adam and Eve in the first bite of the apple, when they knew better than God Himself without even knowing how or why they knew that.

do the pastors of evengenlical mega-churches indulge in the occult while "counting the collection offerings" ?

or "planning" sermon deliveries to the elderly to extract funds from the poor?

[in the sense of 'occult' = 'hidden']

originations? hard to say where, but if "occult" means knowledge hidden from public view ( and perhaps 'given' by non-supreme dieties (sic) ?) then earliest cllues could possibly be found in cave-paintings like Lascaux and the Basque language. [limiting my observations to "the western world" traditions since I don't really know much about other parts of the human race's history(s)

It was originated by those who wanted to hide knowledge
and surround it in fear and mystery so they can have false power and control.
They did this for the same reason this has always been done, to keep man stuck in ingnorance and fear.
To make men slaves. True knowledge makes men free and that is what they fear the most, freedom.
Basically the "occult" is a trap.

As far back as I have been able to trace it to date it seems to have originated in ancient Sumer. The gods taught mankind the mysteries and this was mans religion. I can't wait to see the rest of the answers. Peace and love>
