After reading information and talking to my vet about breeding my dog, I learned that a dog is fertile after she stops bleeding. However, I also heard that a dog is only receptive to a male when she is fertile. Now my dog is still bleeding slightly and yet she has been receptive to a male twice now. Is it possible that she is fertile even though she has not stopped bleeding completely?

Your dog is probably not quite there even though she is receptive to the male.. There may be many reasons that the dog is recieving.. one is both are inexperienced and are not sure about timing yet. an inexperienced male is known to breed early and late in the heat cycle. And a female will let him breed.. Not all females will.. but many will.. it's inexperience on both sides. She will not concieve until the bleeding is over. and she starts the next phase of her heat. there are only just a few days a dog can accually concieve. although she may let the male breed for many days.

hope this helps. ps.. go to amazon and look up a book for beginner breeders there is alot of information out there that can guide you ...

GOOD LUCK

Normally when the color of her blood turns a yellowy brown and has slowed down is when she is most fertile (usually in the end of second week). Really every dog is different though, some are ready near the beginning and some in the third week. Just breed her every other day until she shows signs of not wanting to. (Unless you aren't trying to breed)
I personally have blood work done at 9 days into her cycle to pin point her most fertile day.

Yes! Most dogs ovulate on about day 10-14. This is counting from the first day of the heat cycle when bleeding starts. They can have slight bleeding throughout the entire cycle, so she very well could have become pregnant.

Your vet can do a vaginal swab and look at it under the microscope. Depending on what kind of cells he sees, he can tell you when your dog is most fertile.

Dogs are individuals - there are no hard and fast rules. If she's standing for the male and flagging, she's fertile.
