You need to evaluate your technique. Are you still thinking about the keyboard or are you simply letting the words flow through your fingers? Hitting a wall can be annoying, but you can break through it if you vary what you are doing - even a slight change can help break the routine you have fallen into, and which seems to be hindering your progress.

I believe the only way to improve your typing speed is to practice, practice, practice!!
Try taking a course in typing that uses a typewriter without the keys identified. Meaning, no letters on the keys. They fastest typists do not look at the keys when they type.
It also depends on the keyboard you are using. Not all keyboards are made the same. They space the keys differently, the number keys may be on the side or on the top or both. If you are testing your wpm, I would suggest you use the same keyboard as you are comfortable with it.
Good luck!
50 wpm is an okay speed.

I can type about 90 words a minute. Yes, 90. And I think the thing that helped me the most was starting at a young age. I'm 21 now and started to type when I was about 11 years old. From there, I started to play computer games, and of course, chatting was a huge part..it grew over time. I think, however, if you want to go faster, you need to practice your technique. Try to memorize best you can and type fast as you can. If you mispell, it's okay. It only grows better with time and trying!

I think you need outside help if you've hit a wall. There is a typing tutor on this page if you scroll down. PS. I type at 110+wpm, thought I'd throw that in. But I started typing as a teenager and graduated school on 85 wpm, but I've always loved typing....
