Generally the military will 'look the other way' as long as the veteran is not participating in a political event and/or is not claiming that current military status.

RETIRED veterans can wear their uniforms at appropriate times, such as in parades, at veterans events and etc. They can either wear the uniform as it was when they retired, or since they are subject to recall to active duty, they can wear the current uniform. They wear the rank they had at the time of retirement and are to wear the uniform in its entirety and correctly.

An honorably discharged may wear his uniform under certain conditions as prescribed by the President. In general, this means they can not wear it without specific authorization for that event. Most of the time when a veteran other than one who was retired wears the uniform they are wearing it improperly, only wearing part of it and are violating regulations.

In some cases a civilian may wear a uniform when attending a military program and of course, actors can wear it if they do not bring dishonor to the services.

When wearing the uniform those retirees and honorably discharged must comply with all the UCMJ and political rules for military personnel, such as not wearing it to a partisan political event or anti-war protest.

Some Veterans are allowed under Federal Law and a DOD directive to do just that. You must do so according to the Regs of the branch in question, just like you were still Active. Retired members of the Army can add a "Retired Patch", not sure if other branches have those.

If they are honorably discharged they can wear their uniform in military parades or other parade that show military pride as well as any event that would honor the person wearing it or is authorized by the service they served in. Weddings, military balls.......But they cannot pretend to be military recruiters or anything crazy like that if they are already out or just hang out at the mall trying to get a date or something.

Veterans day, Memorial day and the 4th of July If you served honerably you can still put on a uniform (if it fits) WITH your approved rank and unit symbols
