Have you looked into crate training your dog? You put your dog in a crate when you leave for work and let them out when you get home. We used to do it for our dog, except I came home for lunch and let her out, always.
Dogs go nuts in a huge space when they're alone - they are naturally 'denning' animals who prefer small places to sleep - like under tables and such.
I think this would help your issue - if the dog is being destructive during the day while you're away.

Why would you want to medicate a healthy dog for a behavior problem? Separation anxiety is not difficult to correct. But you have to know how. My suggestion is to enroll in a good obedience class and learn about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. Then you can teach your dog good behavior, correct bad behavior and have a much better pet than one that is medicated.

I wouldn't use medication except as a last resort. Do you crate your dog when you are at work/out? My dogs love their crates, they feel safe and at home in them. Also, we give them something to chew or something to keep them busy while we are gone. Kong makes an excellent "busy ball" which dispenses treats at regular intervals.

When your dog is being needy and whines or jumps up on you, make sure not to pet him! Ignore him. Comforting the animal when they are excited only reinforces the behavior. The only acceptable time to pet your buddy is when he is calm.
