I am working on the same problem.
Exercise alone will not solve the problem if you continue to eat at the same rate you always have.
I am on a four-day-a-week split-routine of weights and cardio training.
Low fat diet and no sugar(the no sugar part kills me as I love ice cream, cookies, cake, etc.)
Portion control is a big part of my diet. I do not believe that fad diets work for the long haul. I eat what I want, given the above guidelines, when I want, I just limit the amount of my intake.
One more thing.Be patient! I don't know about you, but my gut did not appear overnight and it will not go away overnight.

Cut out all white flour, white sugar products such as desserts & soda. Eat whole grain products & only lean meats such as turkey . Then add at least two salads (light on the salad dressing) to your diet per day & you'll lose weight.
