meaningless?

Doesn't that presuppose there actually is meaning?

I get a lot of the "there are no absolutes, so life is what you make it mentality" which would infer the same thing that there is no meaning in life except the one you apply to it. It's a debate for presuppositions. In otherwords if there are absolutes then we have a reference point for reality and meaning and if there are not then its relative and subjective = whateverism.

For atheists life is the opposite of meaningless hollowness and waste of space and incomprehensible non-caring universe.
We do know that it is the most likely thing is that IT IS meaningless. And don't play with the words.

Since we are here, let's just live our lives to the fullest.
Atheists do not wait for a Heaven to be given to them. Atheists would try to create heaven on earth if it wasn't the indoctrination in schools and evangelical megachurches.

It has a meaning to humans for sure, that is indisputable, whatever your religion or no religion is.....but does it have a meaning to the universe? Most likely NOT.
that's the only time I've seen atheists declaring th atlife is most likely meaningless. In the whole picture. Not personally.
If that was true, suicide rates would rise among atheists, which isn't what we see.

Oh, my. Where did you come up with the idea that any atheist believes life is meaningless???????????

Indeed, most of them find it extremely valuable, and cherish every moment, and live it to its fullest. Never met an atheist who wasn't curious about everything, extremely educated, thoughtful, and bright. Most pity those who are not as intelligent as they are, but have found few vengeful or vicious. Never read where an atheist murdered a physician even if he didn't agree with abortion.... Most of the murderers in our prisons are very religious supernaturalists. (Look up the figures if you don't believe it.)

Gee? What ARE you reading? Try Scientific American, Nature, Discovery Magazine. Try some great books, Why Darwin Matters, The God Delusion, The Third Chimpanzee, A Short History of Almost Everything, Guns Germs and Steel.... you seem so uninformed. Hope this helps.

Hello, Naked Emperor, I enjoyed your post, and as a lifelong atheist--from age 9 'til my current age, 71--I can't say I truly grasp all of Sartre, which is my grievous loss. Once, in the late '60s, when I actually was a student in Paris, I actually saw Jean-Paul Sartre walking past. I raced to him and asked this philosophy who told the world of his journey through meaninglessness, "Sir," I said in my not-yet decent French, "What is the meaning of life"? He said to me, "Buy me a glass of wine and I'll tell you." He told me, and as we were leaving the cafe, the waiter said, 'Hey, dummy, there's no exit there.' (He was a Parisian waiter). Before we departed, I asked Sartre to tell me his definition of heaven. 'I do not know,' he said, 'But hell is other people.' This great man, my fellow atheist, walked slowly away into the meaningless Paris night and I picked up a Belgian girl in red who gave me the clap. Life, oh life is meaningless and the universe is empty. Ahhhhhhh. I think I'll go out in the backyard and eat a worm.

What gave you the erroneous impression that life is meaningless if you don't believe in the tooth fairy?

It does not take a belief in God to love family. Want to help mankind. Watch Basketball. Play with children.

Are you catching the drift here?

By they way, I happen to think there is a God but I respect those that don't.

Atheists don't think that life is meaningless, they think that there is no god that directs life and gives it meaning. There's a difference.

Life has meaning to YOU and to those around you. That does not mean YOU have meaning to the universe.

Who of us ever said life was meaningless?

We say life has more meaning since this is the only life we have.

You could call me an atheist to organized religion, and an agnostic to the idea of God. But I certainly think this life has very much meaning. You don't need religion to see that.

I don't think you understand. There is no greater meaning than life itself.

To reproduce in the furtherance of our species. To make it better for future generations.

What is the great meaning in your life? Is it about getting to heaven? Eternal worship? How does the idea of god give your life meaning?

Atheists believe that there is no God, in context, and that there is no major power controlling everything. To that end, they still believe in right and wrong.
However, there is the major problem, as if life is meaningless, then why dont' they sink into a stupor and commit suicide, since they can't change their course of action, beyond simple pleasures in the world...or causing misery for others?
