Last time I checked, rightly or wrongly, Northern Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So why are the English, Welsh and Scottish barred from applying?

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (green card lottery) - is there to increase diversity in US society. It gives around 50,000 people from countries that are under-represented in the US the small opportunity of winning a visa. The British have loads of legal immigrants who go over to the US each year by themselves - usually without too much difficulty - which means they are not under-represented and so therefore do not qualify for the lottery.

I believe that the people of Northern Ireland are allowed to apply as part of the Good Friday Agreement - and how it recognises that a person born there can legally identify themselves as being either Irish, British or both. :-)

There are a number of countries (about 18) whose citizens are not eligible for the DV lottery because they sent a total of more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. over the period of the previous five years. The UK is included in that list. Northern Ireland is considered a separate entity for DV purposes.

The Northern Irish only get in as a result of a provision in the Good Friday Agreement. In addition, you have to have been unemployed for three months and the visa is only for three years, extendible for a further three. Every person who gets one of these visas reduces the number of employment based visas available by one. Other than that, the rules for NI are the same as for GB.

Maybe, because there have been too many suicide bombers linked to UK. They now assume UK as a terrorist country. Well, to a US immigration office if you British and non-white then you must be a terrorist or have a potential to be one, therefore a potential danger to the country.....USA is a racist country they discriminate you even before you enter the country they discriminate you while you in the country and they suck you dry making sure you never return again.

its maybe because they've had accepted enough immigrants from UK in the past year or englanders have extra quotes when applying for different type of visas.
