after owning our bird for a little more than ten years everyone was under the assumstion that Charlie (our bird) was a male. Unitl last week when he or i should say, she started laying eggs. snd she has never been exposed to any other bird. So whats the deal and we have kept her on the same diet ever since we got her. so can someone please help me make sense of this.

My cockatiel did not lay eggs for the first 7 years of her life and then when ever it came to lay again (6 months) she would go to town. She also got what is called egg bound, which basically means she can't get the egg out and had to go the vet. But boy she would lay 10 eggs to a clutch and if you took them away to soon, she just kept on laying.

After a short time period the eggs should be taken away because they are infertile and she will lay on them forever, not a healthy thing. Also remember she is under stress be as gentle with her as you can be. By the way this is a cycle of life, just to help you make sense of this. I use to collect the little eggs, after awhile the dry up inside. Great for decorating wreaths and things with.

Laying eggs can be an emotional thing, but without a male bird, the eggs will never hatch. One of my cockatiels lays 3-4 about 4-5 times a year.

She LOVES you. Just kidding.

My guess is THIS breeding season, all the environmental stimuli came together and Charlotte is laying. It is not a big deal. Leave the eggs in the cage - she will get bored with them and cut her amount of light down so she will stop. Be sure she gets extra calcium during this time. Scrape a cuttle bone over her soft food daily.

Birds do not need a male to create eggs. Good luck.

when they get really comfortable in a place they start laying eggs because they think it's a nice place to have babies. she might also have a toy or something in her cage that she's attracted to, you might hear her making mating sound while putting her bottom up against this item. make sure she has a cuttle bone and mineral treats she will need the calcium and nutrients. usually tiels will lay 4-5 eggs and sit on them, if the eggs aren't fertilized which is the case with yours, she'll sit on them for a while and then get bored because nothing happens. Leave the egg in her cage because if you take them away she'll lay more in her efforts to have 4-5. if you want her to stop laying, cut down on her daylight hours, she should get less than 8 any more and she'll keep laying and remove anything in her cage that she's attracted to. cutting down on baths also helps. If you cut her daylight hours she might still lay another egg for the first couple days. if she lays another egg and she sits on them, do not remove them. let her sit it out. if she doesn't lay anymore (they're usually a day or 2 apart) and she doesn't sit on that egg, remove it from the cage.

If you aren't ready for eggs then either keep them separate or if you can't keep them separate (for whatever reason) then try to keep a lookout for eggs at the bottom of the cage. If you see any then take them away. (Don't throw them away in case they are fertile, just put them in a box with paper-like stuff that won't hurt them and keep them in a warm room. If they don't hatch (it usually takes about 21-24 days for them to hatch) then throw them away. Also it isn't terribly hard to deal with baby Cockatiels so if you can deal with the adults then you should be able to take care of the babies. (The parents pretty much take care of the chicks and all you have to do is give the adults more calcium and nutrients.)

Female birds do lay eggs even if they have never been with a male. This is what i understand to be the sign of her wanting to breed. don't worry she is fine and normal. this happens all the time with other birds too. don't worry you will not be having babies the eggs are not fertile.
