Here's how to train a dog (any dog) ...
If your dog acts in an unacceptable manner, correct him immediately. When your dog acts appropriately, praise and reward him immediately. Try to anticipate unacceptable behaviors before they happen and squelch them before the dog even has a chance to act.
Note that there are different techniques for doing these things, but simply put, that is how all trainers train their dogs.
Practice every day and you'll have a well behaved dog soon enough.

I am wondering how old your dog is?
You may want to consider taking him/her to an obedience school. You would probably have to go at least once a week and spend some of your free time (maybe 1 to 3 hours per week) going over the exercises in between classes.
One of the pluses is that you grow a stronger bond with your dog this way. Its fun too!
You are lucky you have a small dog!.....LOL
I had to train a Labrador - a big spaz!
Good Luck

You buy some books & learn how to do it. You can't teach something you know nothing about.
Go to obiedence classes, they teach you how to train your dog.
Contact a trainer. This could be very expensive but only necessary if you have a bad problem with temperament.

first, never ever hit a dog if it does something bad. tell it NO firmly. second, when you teach it tricks, first tell it the command, then show it how to do it, and then tell them GOOD DOG! and pet it alot or give it treats. do this until it starts to do the trick on the command but continue to give it treats or pettings. after a while you won't need to reward it.
EX: Tell the dog SIT. then put a hand near the base of the tail and press down until it sit down. then say GOOD DOG! and pet it or give it a treat. after a while, you won't need to press down on its butt to get it to sit. continue to give it treats. after a while of it sitting on command, stop rewarding it.
hope this helps a little.

Obviously you do not know how so you need to be taught how to teach your dog. Obedience classes teach you about dog behavior and how to teach your dog.
