i'm the lady with the 1and a half year old 27 in. jvc analog tv set from sears who's trying to avoid if possible, taking the set in for diagnois and repair. the background of the picture is to dark no matter how hard i try to adjust the contrast, or brightness, or the picture; my tv is also connected to a dish network system thru sbc the phone company;who said maybe the coaxial cable was going bad( it's a rg-59/u) we switched that out but it didn't correct the promblem.

The problem could be with the TV or the source.
First reset the TV to factory defaults (brightness, contrast, picture/tint)

Then try the TV with a VCR, DVD player, or any other source you have in the house. Is the picture still bad? Then TV problem. Is the picture OK, then set-top problem.

Actually Scotty, your cable coming in from the Dish antenna should be RG-6/U instead of RG-59/U. That should still produce a reasonable picture though. You say the "background" of the picture. What does the "foreground" look like or the individual characters look like? The response of "your cable could be going bad", is that from their Tech Support? There may be no way around this. You will eventually have to find a reputable repair shop.
