I guess the same question could have been asked about Rome or Great Britain or the Mongol Empire.
America is great not because of God, but because of our embrace of Individual Freedoms (as opposed to "collective rights") and Capitalism; God has nothing to do with it, and we would be even better were we to reject fairy tales for logic and objective reasoning.
If only the Conservatives were less religious and the Liberals not brainless commies, we would continue to lead the world...

Thanks for the laugh. Even if their were a god, I don't think you could say he favors the USA. Need I remind you of hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 bombings and the list goes on and on. If the US seems favored the only reason would be because of the hard work of it's citizens and no other reason.

actually I just wanted to point out to david n that it's not pride comes before the fall. It's actually "pride comes before destruction and a haughty spirit before the fall" It's a common misconception.
