We have so much conflicting information.
This is for two rex's/teddies (boars): we currently feed them a (small guinea pig sized) bowl of green veggies between them in the morning such as broccoli and cucumber. they have a bowl of dry food in their hutch 24/7. they have a baby corn each when we bring them in for a cuddle, and a bowl of carrot between them for dinner. they also always have hay in their hutch.

the vet, when they went in a while back, said they weren't overweight. it's just that my guinea pig does have a rather large bum! are rex's just a larger breed? or are we over-feeding them?

when i was going to get my first guinea pig i was looking all over the Internet trying to find out all of the information that i could about them. apparently they eat as much as they need, but if they start to become overweight then i would cut down on the green veggies! my guinea pig isn't overweight but he is just really big, and i feed him a bowl of guinea pig food and 4 slices of cucumber and half-full tomato. also sometimes as a treat he gets kale, but if you are going to give kale i would grow your own as the kale you purchase at supermarkets goes off before its best before date and stinks out your fridge! i have this website which says about how much food should be fed e.t.c. hope its helpful!

Piggies are eating machines. They graze all day long.

It doesn't sound like you're feeding them too much. My interpretation of the diet you described is a little light on the dark green lettuces & high Vitamin C veggies.

Feed them Romaine lettuce, green or red curly leafed lettuces, endive, raddichio, parsley, cilantro, baby spinach, dandelion leaves, etc. Also include bell peppers (any color) and some tomatoes in addition to what you're already feeding them. Its great you know to keep hay for them at all times. I would limit the carrot to one baby sized carrot each. They are high in sugar. The standard is one cup of veggies per day, per pig.

Some piggies just have really big bums! I would say your piggies are not overweight just because they have wide bums. I have a few like that! LOL!

Just make sure you add vitamin C to the diet, as they might not get enough from vegies alone. You can feed the pediatric syrup (500mg/teaspoonful) from a dropper or syringe (they only need about 25mg a day). Or, I add 100mg/16 ounce of water every day. Yes, vitamin C breaks down in light and water after several hours, but pigs drink a lot and so they are getting enough every day. I've done this for 20 years and they live long healthy lives and have fabulous litters.

You are not overfeeding them! You are feeding them perfectly! It's not that breed has big bum's....every guinea pig is different and its not overweight...That guinea pig is probably very happy it has such a great owner!

You actually need to feed them more or at least differently. You need some dark leafy greens liek romain, green leaf lettuce (no iceburg). Be careful of broccoli and cucumber, they are known to cause gas which can e deadly. Not too much of them. Parsle, cilantro, bell pepper.. are all good choices. I think it is great that you are trying to take good care of your pig!

i don't think you are feeding them too much. guinea pigs love to eat! I give my piggies a slice of banana in the morning, and a handful of parsley/cilantro at night. I also refill their food bowl, and give them fresh hay. maybe only give them 1/4 of a carrot at night. they will never go hungry, that's for sure :)
