Repent means to agree with God that you've sinned and to turn away from those sins.
To atone means to make the sin right.
In the Old Testament we read that to atone for the sin of stealing a sheep, you are supposed to give the guy you stole it from four sheep.
If you take a human life without good reason you are supposed to forfeit your own life.
The Bible says that we are all sinners and to satisfy the requirements of a Holy God, God had to send His only Son Jesus to die and atone for our sins.

You repent by admission of sin and the asking for forgiveness - this is the act of turning away from sin or doing penitence.
You atone or expiate by making amends for sins; altering behavior such that it is less sinful.
Take it from a sinner with nothing further to lose; we all go astray and it is only grace which saves us in the hereafter.
Not perfect, just forgiven.

Well, if you are a Christian, you first have to be truly sorry for whatever it is that you want to atone for. You have to truly regret doing it, not just say "I'm sorry" or "forgive me". You HAVE TO MEAN IT! I can't stress that enough. If you truly wish you hadn't done what you did, you need to apologize to whoever you wronged (If it involves wronging someone else). Then, after asking their forgiveness, ask God to forgive you. If you do this, that's it. Your sin is erased in the eyes of God. But, again, only if you truly mean it, and aren't just saying the words because it's what you're 'supposed to do'.

Repentence means recognizing we have disobeyed God. We feel remorse and turn away from that sin. We ask Him for forgiveness and He is faithful to forgive. It means, (in the Greek), to change directions. Repentance is turning away from sin and turning toward God.We turn away from sin by renouncing our sinful nature and by the renewing of our mind.We turn toward God by looking to Jesus who alone has all the power to forgive sins.the apostles were given authority to proclaim the gospel and to led us to Christ not the actual forgiving of sins.Acts 2:37,38.

atonement happened at the cross
repentance is looking toward the cross
ie when you turn away from sin, you turn to Christ's sacrifice at the cross

I go to the person I have hurt and tell them I am sorry and if there is anyway to make it right, then I do so. For example, if I accidently broke something of theirs, I would fix or replace it if possible. If it was impossible to replace, I would ask them how else I could compensate them.

The best thing to do is get alone by yourself; get down on your knees and ask God to forgive you for your sins of fornication, jealousy, anger, self-righteousness, lying, etc.
Jesus Christ made the substitutionary atonement for our sins when He died on the Cross and took our sins upon Himself.
So your prayer will go like this
Father, I ask that you forgive me for lying to my friend. I thank you for watching over me and protecting me and for providing for me. I forgive all people who have sinned against me. I believe that you sent Jesus who died, was buried and resurrected so I can have eternal life because I believe on Him. Thank you for saving me and Thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ and in His name I pray. Amen
