I tried dying my hair a while back. That was my first time doing that and in the end I came out with no difference in color. My friend laughed and said I had to use the whole bottle which I didnt because I figured that would make my hair super dark (I was trying to go a little darker brown than current color). So I would like to know the correct way to dye medium/long hair so that it all gets dyed evenly. Or would it be safer for me to go to a stylist my first time? and ask them for tips if I were to ever do it myself later?

you can do it without a styleist, just follow the directions. also you may want to have someone there with prior expirience with dyeing, mabey a parent.

I strongly suggest that you go to a pro & have her determine what color is best for you, once she determines what natural tones are already in your hair. (gold or red) From there, she will give you her opinion as to what color would look most natural on you, given your skin tone. If you like the color you end up with, then go back to the stylist for a retouch in six weeks. If the color looks good on the rest of your head, except for what has grown out, then you don't need to have the color pulled out to the very ends after the hair color has been on the regrowth for the alloted amount of time. By not having the color put all over your hair, it keeps your hair from getting all dried out. Not many people know this. When I get my hair colored, I don't let the stylist freshen up the color all the way out to my ends every time. Maybe every third time. My hair is in better shape because of it. Just thought you'd like to know. If you color your hair at home in the future, let someone color it for you & remember about not applying color to the entire head each time or your hair will look like a Brillo pad. :)

Oh, course it would be safer to go to a Hairdresser.
However, if you follow directions on the coloring box, should not be a problem.

In order to go a little darker, some color will go super dark.
If you have gold undertones, you want a med. Brown.
Good names over the counter that are safe are Clairol &
Nice and Easy.

Ash tones cut the red.
Lt. Brown on your hair color will not make much change.
If you are a med. Brown and you go a dark brown,
apply it to roots first and then to the rest of the hair,
do not apply to the ends till the last 10 minutes.
SO ROOTS-APPROX-10-THE SHAFT APROX. 10=MIN.
AND THE ENDS APPROX-5-10 MINUTES.
DO NOT APPLY HAIR COLOR ALL OVER THE HEAD,
THAT IS EVERYONE'S FIRST MISTAKE.
IF YOU APPLY ACCORDING TO WHAT I STATED YOU WILL GET A LITTLE DARKER AND HAVE EVEN COLOR.

IF YOU WANT TO GO A SHADE LIGHTER-USE A lIGHT
GOLDEN BROWN, OR A MEDIUM SHADE OF BLONDE
IT WILL NOT GO SUPER LIGHT UNLESS YOU ARE USING BLEACH.

GOOD LUCK

If I were you, I would go to a hair stylist and get my hair dyed since that is the best way. Although, your hair keeps on growing so if you dye your hair, a few weeks later you'll have your natural color showing on the top of your head. You'll either have to grow out your dyed hair or keep getting it re-dyed every 2-4 weeks.

Reading the directions is the first step for dying your hair. Also, if you have any questions you can call the help line number listed on the instructions.
I dye my hair without problems. However, if you are not sure about it; have a professional dye it the first time & ask questions. Good luck!
