i know that in Old Icelandic (i.e. Medieval) it means sheepskin, but not sure about modern Icelandic. context would probably help.

æ is the letter ash by the way

"Gæra" means sheepskin. It's hard to imagine why someone would say that to you, it makes no sense. Are you sure she didn't say "gæfa"? That means luck and is also used in a similar way like "my love" in English.
