Alas, you have to learn them one by one, just like the French do.

There is no set rule, they just have to be learned. However: all words that end in 'ion' so those with 'sion' and 'tion' are always feminine. Also, all diseases and illnesses are feminine as is the word for war. Except for the word for AIDS which is SIDA which is masculine I think. Most foreign words are masculine. Also, a mjority of words than end in an 'e' are feminine. Good luck!

feminine words usually end with e and masuculine do not.
if you speak spanish the difference will be more obvious.
for example:
la casa=la maison
el perro= le chien
i think that mostly you have to practice these words and eventually you'll know wheter they are femenine or masculine.
there's great french lessons on CD-ROM you can get anywhere and if you dont feel like buying then you can check some out from your local library.

Memorization my friend...unfortunately the old "anything that ends in an 'e' is feminine" does not work as there are so many exceptions (ex. le livre, le texte, le disque, etc.). I can tell you though that anything that ends in -sion, -tion, -xion, -ette, and -elle will be feminine. That is the only "rule" I can offer. Also, borrowed words from English such as "les jeans," "le fast food,""les chips," etc. are usually masculine

In the beginning, learn each one individually. You'll start to see a pattern after a while, although there are always exceptions.
