Florida, New Hampshire, Washington, and Texas have no state income tax. There may be a few others as well. Keep in mind that states without an income tax have to make up the income somewhere. They often have much higher property taxes and sometimes sales taxes as a result.

As to which states have the lowest tax burden, it really depends upon your situation. If you own property but have limited income, you probably want a state with relatively low property taxes. If you have lots of income but don't own any property, a state with no income tax may make more sense for you -- just keep in mind that you do pay property taxes indirectly as they are built into the rent by your landlord.

The states that do not charge state income tax are Alaska, Nevada, South Dakota, Washington, Texas, Wyoming, and Florida.

We have no state income tax in Florida, but property taxes can be pretty steep depending on the area.
