If you are referring to the stacked leather washers that make the handle, you shouldn't have too many worries. The leather can dry out ,scuff up and deteriorate but if you keep it clean and use either saddle soap on it or neatsfoot oil to keep the leather oiled it will extend its life and protect it from water.

The carbon steel blade with rust as will the guard if not dried and oiled. If the leather handle gets soaked, you'll have to let it dry before oiling.

Traditional K-Bars will eventually rust because they use a carbon steel blade. The blade should be oiled after being exposed to water sooner than later. They did make some other types that were more rust resistant in the past decade.
