So if there is disease in the soil the rose trees will be the first ones to get sick Bugs or whatever has disease. The grape vines are more hardy then the rose bushes.

I don't want to correct you chefgrill, but roses were originally planted at the end of rows in France to detect disease or natural infestation. We do live in 2007 now and advances have been made, particularly in California, to where insect/pesticides are used, and roses are no longer needed as a visual guide. Granted they are not truly needed in Europe either, but they are planted in some vineyards for their nostalgic appeal, and in others per AOC Law. Living in the Napa Valley doesn't necessarily make you the expert. Nor does my pedigree and job make me one, but research will prove that I am correct. I agree wholeheartedly with the first response to this question.

Uh, the only bugs that bother roses are aphids which have nothing to do with the vines. Roses are used to attract bees which pollinate not only the roses, but the grapes too so they can bud and produce fruit.

They plant roses to impart essences into the grapes, and to deter unhealthy insects. Also, it looks pretty.

wineguy is correct, but they are also used for aid in pollination as well. but originally they were planted to be early warning systems for disease. yes we do have pesticides, but the best wines are made with the least amount of intervention. including spraying for pests.

It is my understanding that they are planted to aid in pollination of the grapevines. The vinyards are hoping to bring in bees and other like-minded insects.
