Some of the answers here are simplistic, and some are downright mean. What you are describing is a very complicated thing, with many factors. It is a stressful, despairing place to be, too, at times.

I sympathize with you. I used to be a strong believer, but over the past 10 years I've struggled with so much doubt, and I haven't seemed able to reclaim what I once believed. But I want to, because it gave me comfort in many ways, hope, a framework in which to think about life, and a sense of not being alone. Is this similar to your experience?

If you don't believe in something, you don't. You can't force it, so either you believe in the Christ as Jesus, the son of God, and are therefore Christian, or you don't.
However, there is more to Christianity than the church and the Bible as it looks today - the original Christianity was very different from the present version, more open, with more room for Mystery, not as dogmatic as what you see now. There are more books in the Bible (e.g. the gnostic gospels) and more disciples and prophets than those recognised by most of the clergy and Christians today, so Christianity has changed dramatically from its first years, and from the faith that Jesus prophesied.

If you just look at the enormous variation of churches and belief systems within Christianity - ranging from Roman Catholicism to the Coptic Orthodox church to Protestantism, Calvinism, Mormons, Evangelicals etc - you can see that Christianity is not a uniform faith. There is the central belief in the Christ, but it has changed over time, and hopefully will keep changing. At the centre of Christianity is, as in most spirituality, a message of love, compassion and peace, but we don't see much of that in many of the churches or in the words of Christians.

I am not the best person to be answering this as I have no religion, and I am not interested in religion at all. However the question interested me so I thought I would weigh in.

Not knowing your story and why you are in the position where you are today with regards to believing in Christianity, I suggest making an appointment with the church minister to discuss the issue.

The interesting thing though which you have to ask yourself is when and why did you stop believing? If you can work that out and have some reasoning on how you have got to this stage perhaps the answer will present itself?

By reading the Bible and choosing to believe it. Faith is a choice. Ask God to help you. Do an alpha course. Remember satan is the father of lies and he can put thoughts into your mind that make you believe you cannot become a believer again. He works by deceiving people and making them think his thoughts are your own thoughts. (see 2 corinthians 4:3-4, 2 corinthians 11:3, 1 chronicles 21:1, john 13:2, acts 5:3) Then renounce your belief in his lies and choose to believe Jesus (I am the way, the truth and the life).

maybe you feel ostracised by the Church or super spiritual Christians preaching perfection and unable to live it out.
Good News..don't worry, God is bigger than religion and knows a repentant heart, sounds corny I know..but we have a God of forgiveness, a God who takes time to go and find out the lost sheep and not cut its throat if you know what I mean.
Unless you have commit ed the unpardonable sin of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit..in which case even I tremble at the thought of separation from God forever. I don't go to churches anymore..they are too controlling and lost my respect years ago. But what I have found in the 'wilderness', is a life, a soul, a God who isn't constrained by the rantings of..leaders and vicars and pastors and popes and mullahs and other people putting themselves forward as God's gift to the universe, earth and the very ground we walk on. Intimidation and fear seem to be the hallmark of fanatics in any religion..they come and go but God's word will last forever. Get up off your spiritual butt and get back into the high calling in a lowly sort of way..PS. welcome back prodigal :)

When you are down, and you want answers to your meaning of life, You either go religious or the opposite, The person will explore to find an answer, Then one day, [to some] something I cant explain in words It all comes together, You see how mankind build there lives on material gratification, they are wandering through life like empty souls, looking for security love happiness, but will be disappointed, Some will discover God, and have peace, but still have crosses to bear BUT' they know the meaning of life.

You only show that you never where a Christian in the sense of having a relationship with Jesus Christ as your Lord, Savior and friend. For me God is a person that I can communicate with. He is not some kind of impersonal Star Wars force. If you ever knew God as a person, then you would be unable not to believe. You might choose to rebel, disobey, etc., but one thing for sure, you could never not believe.

That said, contragulations, you can still become a real Christian for the first time. This time seek the person of Jesus Christ first, and not the organization.

Stop lessening to these negative people that are always putting God and Christianity down. Read your Bible, with the understanding that it is the true Word of God, and don't let anyone tell you different. Rededicate your life to Christ and ask Him to give you understanding. Just remember, Satan will sneak around and try to tell you, it's no use, and everything he can through at you to bring you down, son hang in there.

Realize that there are only two types of people in the world-The Children of God and the Children of the devil period..Those who belong to God are anointed to rule and reign as true kings of Christ and walk and live by the power and life that comes through the Holy Spirit which has made us ONE with Christ Jesus. If you have fallen, Come back to God and ask God to anoint you with this power as you read the book of Acts.Find other believers who have received this power and anointing and have them pray with you and for you to receive this experience and your life will never be the same again..Don't let the devil deceive you and rob you of your heritage in Jesus Christ the soon coming king. Go to trumpetmin.org and get busy for Christ for His hour is at hand for his return for those who love Him and are chosen as his Bride...

My suggestion is not to believe in Christianity..
but to talk to The Lord and build your relationship with Him alone...
Christians are just people who know their Saviour and Lord..all in a different place on the same path...all learning and growing..
but the only way to find true fulfilment is to press into The Lord Himself and get to know Him..He will never let you down...

Love and Blessings xxx
