Sciatica is pain along the sciatic nerve. It usually results from compression of nerve roots in the lower back. Common causes include disk disease, osteophytes, and narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis). Symptoms include pain radiating from the buttocks down the leg. Diagnosis is by MRI or CT. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies help confirm the affected level. Treatment includes symptomatic measures and sometimes surgery, particularly if there is a neurologic deficit.

not necessarily some kind of degenerative disease. it's just that all the parts of the body are very interconnected. you need to find the definite source of the problem (is it really the back, or is it at the other end, at the knees?) then work on that. i suggest a chiropractor or at the least a massage therapist. acupuncture might help too. it could take some time to cure, depending on how long you've had this problem. try icing the painful areas as well, but not too much or too long, as that can lead to arthritis.

You probably have sciatica. Is the nerve from your back radiating to the knee and calf. You should see an orthopedist. The doctor can inject cortisone or prescribed some medication. Good luck!
