My husband and I have a 6 month old son and don't want to raise him in Los Angeles, where we now live. My family is all here, however, so I don't want to move too far away. We just want to find someplace (preferably within a 6 hour drive) that is family friendly with some culture and good schools (my husband is an elementary school teacher). San Fransisco is too crowded and expensive. Any other ideas???

If you love the ocean and don't want to be too far from the beach, check out the beach towns of Oceanside, San Luis Obispo, San Clemente, and Mission Viejo. All are lovely for young families. Between San Diego and San Clemente are several cities that are under the radar for insane house prices, like Carlsbad, Escondido, and Vista. Ventura is decent, as is Oxnard. Inland, if you like the mountains, Tehachapi is within 3 hours of L.A. and is much cooler than Bakersfield. Bakersfield is hotter than h-e-double hockey sticks but the house prices for new houses are much more reasonable than San Bernadino or Riverside. In the Central Valley, Kingsburg, Visalia, and Tulare have great house prices and farm kids tend to be some of the most decent kids I have met yet. Good teachers are needed everywhere, so it's only a matter of deciding where you want to be.
Good Luck.

Look into Ventura County, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, anything of the areas just north/west of LA. The schools are great, cities are safe and they are very family oriented. You are only an hour from LA and an hour from Santa Barbara and a half hour from the beach. Plenty to do in any direction.

If you want to stay in California, I would suggest the communities from Santa Maria to Paso Robles. You would have great schools, a mild Mediterranean climate, and housing that isn't too overpriced.

If you want to leave California, the two fastest growing cities are Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas Nevada. Both are clean growing communities with great schools, affordable housing, a more "conservative" life style, and in the case of Nevada, no state income tax.

Your husbands profession will make it easy for him to find employment anywhere, teachers are always in demand,

I live in Orange County. It's not the place to go for culture, but it's not horrible. The schools are good (depeinding on where you live), you can get to LA in an hour or so, and lots of families live here.

Also, the cost of living isnt much different than Los Angeles.

I really like the San Luis Obispo/Morro Bay area. There are alot of little towns up that way that seem like great places to live. That will not put you too far away from your family.

California is huge with thousands of family orientated communities. I lived in San Bernadino and Santa Cruz, both areas were nice.

you rather should not be worrying with regard to the minimum salary, what you could examine is the "residing salary", it relatively is a calculated statistic that takes the value of residing into attention and tells you what's the minimum you would be making to be waiting to stay interior the city. you could look into the link under and put in only approximately any US County to get this fee. yet in performing some rapid checking the residing salary for a million individual in l. a. County is $11.37/hr, in Dallas County TX it relatively is $9.29. So confident it relatively is greater low priced to stay in Dallas. yet once you look into the minimum wages, at $7.25/hr the minimum salary in Dallas is $0.75/hr under l. a. and nonetheless $2.04/hr under what you would be waiting to stay. So in case you're observing minimum salary jobs, it would be very possibly which you will nonetheless be in older residences in components that are no longer so wonderful, the place roaches are your roommates.

I would consider Ventura or Santa Barbara counties.

Check out the crime and school stats first.

And take me with you!

Austin, Texas doesn't meet your 6 hour drive criteria but I think that you would love it.
