someone peoples eyes are more sensitive when going from darkness to light. next time keep one eye closed when you turn on the light and your eyes will adjust easier. the same goes when transitioning from a lighted room to darkness

This isn't abnormal at all, all eyes usually hurt at spontaneous bursts of light.

Since your eyes have been closed as you are sleeping your eyes get used to the dark. Sorta like being in a pitch black room, but after a while you can see better.

Your pupils are basically slamming shut, because in the dark they open to make use of the available light.

actually, you are partially correct. but, the real reason is because your pupils have to decrease in size really quickly when exposed to light that fast, and so they start to hurt!
