Kitchens suit fresh, crisp colours - try soft blues or minty sage greens, they'll look fab against the dark wood and white.

I have the same type of kitchen. I put maple on one wall (maple is a peachy colour) and mint frost on the other three walls (mint frost is a medium to light green) The colours go well together. Pick colours you can live with that don't darken down a bright airy kitchen. Yellow is outdated. Cheers.

Use bold colours for one wall in the kitchen which is the one thats opposite to the dining room, for the other kitchen walls use a contrast to this colour or maybe a lighter shade
good luck

Go to Lowes, look at some paint samples & bring the samples home, then hold them up to your walls. It'll give you a little bit of an idea as to how the color will look on your walls. If you wish to keep the large open floor plan, do not use dark colors, as it will shrink up the rooms in a flash. Have fun!! :)

Paint or accessorize the kitchen and dining room all one color, such as:
rose
melon
sage
aqua
smoke blue
caramel
Then, paint the DR wall facing the living room the same color as those walls - creates a flow of color.

I like with the dark wood a terracotta also but you can also go with a melon color. Then you can find pottery to hang on the walls with that color on them to accent it, and candles for the countertops.
Lowe's is a good place like one other said for getting good ideas. Yes, dark paint with dark cabinets will close you in and make room smaller.

What about doing a silver-and-gold theme? Do lots of whites/silvers and deep golds/yellows. Then, just drop some reds or greens in the mix. The traditional colors will pop out so much more in the silvery haze. Great idea... good luck!
