She's biting you because she's scared. Put yourself into her shoes for just a moment. In the wild they are prey. And she's looking at you, and you are much bigger than she is...so she's thinking that you're going to hurt her, she doesn't know that your intentions are to be friends with her, just yet.
The way I tame my hamsters is by getting a treat and giving it to them in their open cage door. Then everyday doing that but tempting them into my hand. When you're able to get it into your hand, cup your hands around it and sit down and hold it close to your chest and pet it. Be patient. I have one hamster that will come when he's called, that didn't take overnight, trust me..it's taken almost a year to get him to come to his cage door when I call him. Patience is the key to having a hamster.
You're not going to get infected by any diseases from a petstore hamster. You can give it more than it can give you. If you could get something from a petstore hamster, I would have had something a long time ago.
Just be careful to make sure you don't drop it if it bites you, you don't want to hurt it.
Good Luck. If you need to ask any questions, email me...susanchristlieb2002@yahoo.com

No you won't get infected! Makesure you wash your hands before you play with your hamster because you might smell like food and they have bad eye sight so your hamster will think your hand is food! Maksure you handle your hamster everyday to keep him/her tamed! If your hamster keeps on biting you then clean out the bath tub really good and put him/her in the tub with you in it and talk and pet your hamster for 10 minutes or more everyday!!!

No you shouldn't get infected.
Not a lot of people seem to realise that hamsters often bite when you first get them. They are not tame straight away like domestic cats and dogs, they need to be tamed by regular handling. Both my hamsters bit when I first got them - I handled them every day, with gloves on at first! Persevere and he will get used to you and stop biting.

I am not sure if you can get an infection but your hamster is probably just scared. I have a shy hamster and what has helped is just petting her and not trying to overwelm her.

Its just a sign of affection!
Pets like rodents need to be handled regularly, so they become used to human contact.
If its a wild Feral hamster you have taken on, then yes, get it checked out. If its a domestic bread hamster, then I'm sure its nothing a sticky plaster cant cure.
