I am going to new york in december where is the best part to stay for shopping etc, so i am in easy reach of everything, is near central park good or 5th avenue

try the Comfort Inn in midtown manhattan : choicehotels.com
or the Hotel St James..6th ave and 45th st...its near Rockefeller, you can see the christmas tree there..its also close to 5th ave..and Times sqr is right down the block..and less than a mile to CPark..

THe Plaza Hotel was converted into Condos, The Pennsylvania Hotel is not where where you want to be, and in a not so great area. Yeah it's near Macy's but Bloomingdales and other stores a a mile and more away.
You don't state Price Range There are Hotels on Central Park South and Fifth Ave. that are real nice and real expensive like $600 per night.
The great thing about Manhattan is the everything is within easy reach by walking, subway or taxi.
Personally if I was visting I wouldn't stay in Times Square Area --

The Michelangelo west 50 th street Seventh Ave you are central for everything there and a beautiful hotel as well, if you want to go to Maceys just jump the M6 bus you can pick it up from opposite hotel on 7 th Ave

the pennsylvania. Slap bang opposite madison square garden. round the corner from macy`s and blooming dales. its centre to most of the sights too. in december? lucky you. make sure you go up the empire state building and the outside part. i went in 2003
