It sounds like it slipped out of place. It needs to be treated by a medical professional. Attempting to get it back in at home can result in more damage. In addition it would be painful. Get him to a urgent care or ER

It could be a muscle spasm. Call your dentist or emergency room.
It has happened to me. The doctor gave me a muscle relaxer and manipulated my jaw until he could get it back into position.
Now, if I feel the muscles start to tense, I can take less drastic means to stop the problem.

If you are not taking your husband to the hospital, I would suggest putting a heating pad in the jaw hinges to relax the muscles. A pain killer might be good to help it to relax.
Did he yawn and put it out of place?

I am sure you have gotten it closed by now. If not, gently move his jaw in and out like you were pulling his chin whiskers. If this doesn't, EMERGENCY ROOM!!!!
