Here's how you deal with a cat or any other animal who comes into your territory [garden/land/etc].
Take a large heavy stick, broom handle will do with brush head on if possible.
Wait until the cat comes into your garden. Rush outside waving the broom in front of you, snarl a lot and grit and show your teeth. Bang the broom loudly on the ground.
You do not need to physically attack the cat. All you need do is show this cat that it's your territory and he/she must just buzz off.
You may have to repeat this exercise a number of times. You may also throw a stone or two at the cat. A near miss is as good as a hit. The cat will get the message.
Be bold, be loud, be boss.
This is a territorial dispute. The cat will understand this and will react accordingly and if it's got half a brain will not bother coming back, but will instead find someone else's garden to pooh in.

Keeping Cats Out Of The Garden
Q. Does anybody know of a way to keep cats from using my garden and potted plants as a toilet?
I found a remedy which works for us. I hope it does the same for you. We sprayed the plants with a solution of a little cayenne and water. It's nontoxic to the animals, doesn't hurt the plants, and boy, the cats sure hate the smell of it when they sniff around to prepare to answer nature's call.
Moth Balls--place a few around the edges of garden, flower area, in pots, etc.--keeps them TOTALLY away!!! And doesn't hurt the plants or vegetables at all.
This is cat repellant recipe I heard on a radio gardening show that featured a well respected garden expert. Her formula is simple:
2 parts cayenne pepper
3 parts dry mustard
5 parts flour
Mix it together and sprinkle where ever you wish to repel cats. It must be reapplied periodically and after a rain.
I took plastic canvas of a complementary color, matching the flower pot, or using brown to blend with soil, and cut a cover to fit round the plant. My cats can not dig in the dirt, so they go elsewhere to "do their business".
If you place some lemon peel or any other citrus peel on the soil of potted plant, the cats should leave the flower alone as they do not like citrus smell.
I use aluminum foil or pine cones around the bigger plants, put cayenne pepper on the soil of the smaller plants. However you questioned "pot plants" and I don't have a tip, except to plant some catnip for the kitties.
My cats used to dig in the houseplants, which would annoy me to no end. So, one day I decided to cover the surface of the dirt in the pots with large pine cones that I had picked on a hiking trip. It worked! No longer did the kitties mess with my plants. The pine cones added a decorative flair, too. However, I now have three children, one of whom loved to grab the pine cones. I solved this problem by tying a large pretty scarf around the plant and covering the pine cones. No more hassles!

No repellent I've ever tried has worked.
They say that if you lay down chicken wire before planting the cats can't dig so they will find somewhere else to go. I'm going to try that next year.
For this year I just dug them an outdoor litter box and put in some sand. They do seem to like it and mostly use it instead of the garden. I scoop it when it gets poopy so that they won't look for a cleaner place (like the garden). If I see one trying to squat in the garden I run over, grab him, and drop him into the approved potty spot. Or I just turn the hose on it!
Cats are gonna poop, better to manage where they poop than to try to keep them from pooping.

that's pronounced as manure. You your self arranged the sparkling floor. that's inviting. Frankly, the cats right here use our flower backyard, the stuff by no potential kills the vegetation. in case you elect to maintain them out purely get considered one of those inexpensive fowl nettings from any backyard grant shops and placed it up over the backyard. It keeps out rabbits too. because cats won't poop interior 50 ft of a competent water source, it may additionally be so basic as putting out a bowl of water (it doubles as a fowl water source for robins) next to the backyard. in case you elect the spray, our gardening complement purely had a write up on cat repellent from messina organic international (google them). not basically is it a plant oil application that lasts a month in spite of what proportion circumstances it rains, it is likewise a money lower back assure that it works.

Moth Balls
They need to be relayed every week though, the smell puts cats off, the other is cayenne pepper, put it on the walls etc but again needs replacing when it rains and in the UK that is often.

Try Moth-balls the smell is enough to distract the most common pest like rabbits and squirrels, I'm pretty sure it will work on dogs as well as cats without harming any.

How about setting up some sprinklers and turn them on when you see the cats in the garden? That would teach them to stay out of there cause cats hate water.

Go to the hardware store, and get cat repellant - I believe it has cougar urine in it, but not enough for humans to smell.
Mix carefully.
Do not teach your children to shoot any animals with super soakers - there have been many injuries from those things
[ while your at it, teach them not to shoot at anyone's face, either. ]
